Investors to get plots at brand new border town (Kenya)

  • Written by  James Kariuki

Real estate investors will be invited to put money in a new township to be created around the Kenya-Uganda One-Stop Border Post at Suam where the government wants to excise 123.5 acres from a forest.

A gazette notice posted last Friday by the Land ministry said residential and commercial parcels of land will be subdivided and offered developers by Trans Nzoia County government.

Public utility plots will be set aside for establishment of government installations like offices, health centres, sports grounds, schools, police stations, markets and county offices.

“The Proponent, Ministry of Land, Housing and Urban Development, through the County Government of Trans Nzoia is proposing to establish a border town at Suam border crossing to Uganda. The proposed border town at Suam will see the conversion of 50 Ha (123.5 Acres) out of the existing 2,350Ha of Suam Forest into a border town complete with both National and County Government functions,” it said in part.

Funds have been set aside for construction of roads, waste management facilities, government offices, electricity set up, among others associated with urban development.

Last year, a Sh4.5 billion contract was awarded to China State Construction Engineering Corporation Ltd for the construction of the 45 kilometre Kitale-Suam road in the next 30 months.

In an earlier interview, Kenya National Highways Authority director-general Peter Mundinia said Kenya and Uganda governments had agreed to jointly fund construction of the road within their territories with assistance from the African Development Bank.

“The project starts at Kitale at the Kisumu-Kakamega-Lodwar-Nadapal junction and runs Northwards through Endebess to Suam. It will greatly enhance trade in Western Kenya and into Eastern parts of Uganda,” Mr Mundinia said during the signing of the contract.
